Art and Design

Intent

At Hevingham and Marsham Primary School Partnership, we believe that Art and Design is one of the highest forms of human creativity.  Art and design will encourage children to develop and extend their creative skills along with opportunities for self-expression, developing resilience and confidence and thinking skills through individual and collaborative activities.  The children will build their knowledge and skills through a carefully structured progression sequence, encouraging them to develop their own ideas, master techniques and take inspiration from great artists of the past and present.

Implementation

Throughout their time at Hevingham and Marsham primary School, the children are given a range of opportunities to explore a wide variety of materials and techniques, developing their skills and thinking as young artists using the Chris Quigley Education Scheme to form the basis of our Art and Design curriculum.  The scheme offers a broad range of artists and techniques across a progressive framework for KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2, providing the staff is a plethora of knowledge to ensure the children develop not just the knowledge of the art work itself but the background and history, plus other cross curricular links.  It also provides staff with progressive tasks to both challenge and assess the children level of knowledge and understanding.

At Hevingham and Marsham Primary School, we aim for the children to receive at least an hour of art and design or design and technology per week, depending on the topic within our two-year rolling programme.  Our supplies are regularly checked and refreshed where necessary but we also allow the ability for staff to request and order resources for more specialised techniques, particularly when there is the opportunity to have outside professionals share and model their skills to the children.
